Path to Becoming an HERS Rater

The first step along the path to becoming a HERS Rater is to complete a RESNET certified training curriculum. During this training, you will learn the foundational principals of the HERS system and you will learn how to use the computer software to produce ratings, improvement analyses, and a variety of other reports. You will also be required to produce three actual ratings under the supervision of the instructor. Upon completion of the course, your next step will be to pass the National Rater Exam which is administered by RESNET. This exam is an open book fifty question multiple choice exam. The exam will be graded immediately upon completion. The training is geared toward enabling students to pass this exam; however all students do not pass the exam on the first attempt. Your success will be closely tied to your efforts before and during the training class.

Upon completing the training and passing the exam, you will be required to complete a mentorship period, during which you will complete three ratings of your own choosing, all under the guidance of an approved mentor. The mentorship period can generally be completed at your own pace.
