RESNET Certification Training & Mentoring
Course Description
For candidates who wish to become certified raters:
Home Energy Raters of Illinois, LLC is a certified RESNET training provider, and offers a complete training regimen to those seeking to become certified energy raters. These classes are limited to 10 students per session and are geared toward passing the national rater accreditation exam. The exam will be administered at the end of the program.
Mentorship Programs:
Upon passing the national rater exam, a mentorship period is required for all rater candidates, during which the prospective rater will conduct three onsite ratings under the tutelage of a qualified instructor. Home Energy Raters of Illinois conducts an ongoing mentorship program which will fulfill this requirement. This program is open to all rater candidates, whether or not they have completed our classroom instruction.
Homeowners and Landlords:
We offer a variety of seminars and workshops offered to homeowners or landlords who wish to educate themselves about increasing the energy efficiency of their properties. Please see below for a list of upcoming classes and workshops. For the hard-core do-it-yourselfers, certain workshops will be geared toward the diagnostic performance testing of your own home. Professional diagnostic equipment will be available to participants of these classes on a rental basis.
Continuing Education Credits:
For current energy professionals, we offer a variety of seminars which meet the RESNET requirements for CPE credit.
For All Prospective Students
It is important that you complete the following prior to attending classes:
- Read the class training guide which will be mailed to you immediately upon receipt of your registration. This training guide will also include a field manual which will be valuable for future use. The cost is included in the class fee.
- Obtain and read a copy of Residential Energy 5th Edition by Krigger and Dorsi. You can either obtain a hard copy, or download a copy from www.srmi.biz. The cost is $45.00.
- Visit www.natresnet.org and review the 2006 RESNET Standards of Practice and Study Guide. You will receive a hard copy of the Standards of Practice in the appendix of our classroom text.
- It will be helpful (but not necessary) if you obtain access to a blower door prior to taking the class. Practice setting it up and familiarizing yourself with some of its functions – you’ll find it interesting. We recommend the Minneapolis Blower Door. If you should choose to purchase your own blower door prior to attending class, contact us. We will arrange for our students to receive a discount on any Minneapolis equipment.
- As much as possible, arrange for life's other responsibilities to be put on "vacation setting" for the period of time during which you will be attending the class. Along with full training days, there will be evening reading and homework assignments. For this reason, we also recommend against long commutes.
Required Course Materials
- A computer with Windows 95 or later operating system, a CD-Rom drive, and a wireless internet connection, which will be required for the national rater exam at the end of the class.

- Tape measure, flashlight, and thumbnail drive for file back-up.
